What are Frescos?

Affresco (in English "fresco") is a painting done on wet plaster, with pigments dissolved in lime water and lime used as white. As the plaster and the pigments dry they become completely integrated.

The history of fresco painting began over 30,000 years ago in the caves of the early Neolithic man. They started applying natural earth pigments to the moist limestone walls of their caves to illustrate their surrounding, the wild animals, and their family life.

Without knowing it, those early humans invented a technique that withstood the challenge of time and enables us to see their works of art some 30,000 years later.

Fresco painting is the only technique that is present throughout the whole history of painting. The apex was achieved during the Renaissance when frescos, by very famous artists like Michelangelo and Raphael, were commissioned for churches, castles, and private Villas.
